Using Land Wisely

"To supply one person with a meat habit food for a year requires three-and-a-quarter acres.  To supply one lacto-ovo vegetarian for a year requires one-half acre.  To supply one pure vegetarian requires only one-sixth of an acre.  In other words a given acreage can feed 20 times as many people eating a pure vegetarian diet..."(as opposed to our average American diet).  Diet for a New America by John Robbins (page 352)

 Water & Fossil Fuel

Producing one hamburger uses enough fossil fuel to drive a small car 20 miles and enough water for 17 showers.  The meat on our tables accounts for more than half of all water used: for the raising and killing of animals.

A major factor in the decline of forests today is the cutting of trees for pastures and crops to feed livestock.

 Farming Methods and the Environment

Vegetarians save an acre of trees each year.  Between 1960 and 1985 alone, nearly 40% of all Central American rain forests were destroyed to create cheap grazing land for cows later served on North American and European plates. (PeTA's Animal Times, Spring 1996)

There are no trees on Easter Island.  There used to be.  Jared Diamond in his book Collapse talks extensively about deforestation.  What was the person thinking when he cut down the last tree?  (There used to be trees--page 104.)
